February, 2009

2/27/09 - LG's Versa just showed up; look for a full report late today or on Monday.

2/26/09: Sorry about the long delay between posts. Between the flu, Mobile World Congress - which I cut short because the flu got worse - and then a sinus infection on top of the flu, I've been out of commission for a while. I'm still catching up, but here are the reports I've written over the past couple of weeks:

bullet Mobile World Congress 2009: Devices Wrap-Up
bullet Mobile World Congress 2009: HTC Magically Beats Everyone Else to Market with Android, Again
bullet Mobile World Congress 2009: Microsoft Updates Windows Mobile by Four Tenths of a Point
bullet Asus and Garmin Team Up to Build Smartphones
bullet Samsung Memoir at T-Mobile is the First 8 MP Cameraphone in the U.S.

Speaking of the Samsung Memoir, I got a review unit in, and while I haven't run it through extensive tests yet, one thing was immediately obvious: image quality is greatly improved by turning Shake Reduction to "ON" (the default is "OFF," and the feature is buried three levels deep in the settings menu).

2/12/09: After attending the Kindle2 launch I've been sick all week, and now I'm prepping for Mobile World Congress. There should be plenty of report updates next week, though this site will probably be dark until I get back.

2/8/09 New reports:

bullet Verizon Wireless Promotes Entire BlackBerry Line - Including the Storm - with a BOGO
bulletAsus and Garmin Team Up to Build Smartphones (completed, should be posted Monday morning)
bullet...and I'm working on a report on Samsung's Memoir at T-Mobile, the first 8 MP cameraphone at a U.S. carrier.

2/2/09 - New reports:

bullet Kyocera Finally Consolidates Sanyo.
bulletMy Company Assessment on RIM has been updated.

I've been getting a lot of questions on the following topics:

bulletDell's entry into the smartphone market
bulletBlackBerry Storm sales numbers
bulletApple iPhone 3G sales numbers
bulletPalm pre exclusivity

I will have a(nother) formal report on the BlackBerry Storm, and we have a formal estimate on when the Palm pre will arrive outside Sprint. In any case, I encourage clients and press to reach out and discuss these issues with me directly.
